History

This arena has a unique story as to its founding, because it was built to host a canadian expansion NBA team rather than a NHL team. The team was the Vancouver Grizzlies which are now the Memphis Grizzlies. Ironic that the team the arena was built for no longer plays there. Either way, the arena was opened in 1995 and has since been a host to the Canucks and now includes a team for the nation’s lacrosse league and an esports team for Overwatch. It was also used to host hockey events at the 2010 Winter Olympic games which it temporarily went under a different name.

This arena is one of the few in Canada that was founded solely based on private funding rather than help from the government. In addition to sporting events, the arena has also been host to other entertainment events such as music concerts and WWE events if you consider those to be entertainment rather than sporting events. The arena has also hosted the Juno Awards multiple times which are the national Canadian music awards if you are unaware. It is also one of the few arenas that have not undergone any sort of major restoration projects since it was opened. It also appears that the arena is not going to be replaced anytime soon and rightfully so. The Canucks have won quite a few Stanley Cups while calling this arena home and we are excited to see if they will be adding to the history here in the meantime.
